ABSTRAK

This study is purposed to (1) find the Tomlinson’s principle on language teaching used by the teacher in SMA N 2 Langsa in English language teaching and learning process. (2) the development of the materials used by the teacher in teaching learning process. The method of this research is descriptive qualitative research. The data was collected through classroom observation, interviewed the teacher and give the questionnaire to the students. The data was analyzed by using the theory of Principle of language teaching by Tomlinson (2010). This research found out that (a) Tomlinson’s principle on language teaching used by teacher only two of four principle, and the implementation of those principles still lack, (b) the materials used by teaching learning process did not really based on the students’ needs and wants, and (c) the relation of materials used by the teacher with Tomlinson’s principle on language teaching still lack because the materials used by the teacher is designed based on the syllabus, not the principle on language teaching used by the teacher.
