ABSTRAK

 


This research aimed to find out the kinds of error and to analyze of error in using gerund in writing made by the second grade students. This research was conducted at SMA Negeri 3 Langsa. The population of this research was the second grade students of SMA Negeri 3 Langsa. The total number of population was 344 students and the sample was 32 students. The sample was chosen by simple random sampling. In this research, the researcher applied descriptive qualitative method. The instrument of collecting the data was writing test that consists of completion test and writing a report text. The result of the research showed that, every students had errors in using gerund. The highest errors was on using gerund as direct object, then using gerund after preposition, and the last the using gerund as subject. In analysing the students’ errors in writing a report text, the researcher concluded that students made many errors in using gerund, especially on gerund as direct object. In relation to this, it is suggested that the students should be more careful in using grammar especially gerund.
