THE IMPLEMENTATION OF PROBLEM BASED LEARNING METHOD IN TEACHING WRITING RECOUNT TEXT AT CLASS VIII SMP NEGERI 2 KUALASIMPANG

ABSTRAK

The aims of the study are to describe how teaching and learning process used problem based learning method in teaching writing recount text at class VIII SMP Negeri 2 Kualasimpang and to know does it improve students ability in writing recount text. A total of 18 students at class VIII.D participated in this study. The instruments used for collecting the data were observation, interview and students’ task. The data collected were analyzed using descriptive qualitative method. The data from the results of the observation in learning process and interview the English teacher and students were analyzed using descriptive, while the data from the results of the students’ task during the research were analyzed using a scoring Rubric of students’ writing and qualitative. And in collecting data about the students’ task, researcher conducted pre-test and post-test. The results show that 1) problem based learning method in teaching writing recount text at class VIII.D SMP Negeri 2 Kualasimpang, the English teacher are used the phase of learning process as a source to make students participate in the learning process. The phase are students orientation to the problem, organize students lo learn, guide individual and group investigations, develop and present the work and the last analyze and evaluate the problem solving process. 2) problem based learning method improves students ability in writing recount text. It is proved by the results of students’ task in post-test. In pre-test, the students did not mastered the all aspects of writing especially in recount text and in post-test the students mastered the some aspects of writing, the students were able to distinguish the generic structure of recount text, meanwhile in vocabulary and language use, the students still not mastered it. It is means that the result of students’ post- test was better than the result of the pre-test after applied the problem based learning method.
