ABSTRAK

This study focuses on the use of the Snowball throwing method (hereafter, ST) in teaching reading. ST can improve students' reading comprehension, in grade X students at SMAN 5 Langsa. This research is a quasi-experimental study, using 20 students in the control class and 20 students in the experimental class. This research is motivated by the low motivation to read students in the English learning process. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of ST on teaching reading which will also affect student learning outcomes. The type of research used is experimental research with the method of quasi-experimental design. Data collection techniques are carried out by means of observation. The analysis technique used is quantitative. The results showed that the learning process using the snowball throwing method could increase students' reading motivation. This can be seen from the student learning process in the pre-test and post-test which showed significant changes, the average learning outcomes of the experimental class in the pre-test was 24.1 and in the post-test 38.05 while the control class averaged the average learning outcomes of pre-test 23.55 and post-test 33.3
