ABSTRAK

This research possesses two objectives. First is to describe what kinds of teacher approach that the teacher used to motivating students in learning English. Second is to describe the process of teacher approach that the teacher used in motivating students in learning English.This research is a descriptive qualitative research. Data sources of this research are the English teacher and tenth grade students of SMA Swasta Cut Nyak Dhien Langsa in academic year 2018/2019. The researcher conducted observation and interview to collect the required data. This research is analyzed by using Fraenklen and Wallen theory for evaluate the data.Based on the research finding in the result of observation and interview, it can be conluded The English teacher’s approach to increase motivation to the students using four approach that is traditional teaching, teacher-centered , student centered classroom approach and the liberationist approach with giving praise, giving subtle ridicule, giving suggestions, and playing motivation videos. The Strategies to increase motivation given by the English teacher to the students were extrinsic motivation (based on source of motivation) and instrumental motivation (based on the purpose) in teaching English as media to arouse students of reaching the goal
