ABSTRAK

This study discusses the improvement of students' writing ability in report text through the discovery learning method in class X MAN 2 Langsa, students' problems in writing ability are students do not have ideas to write, students cannot develop ideas to write, students have no interest in writing English and English teachers do not have the right technique. The purpose of this study is to describe students' achievement in writing report texts and identify factors that influence students' writing report texts by using discovery learning method in class X MAN 2 Langsa. The method used is classroom action research with pre-experimental design which consists of 3 steps. Namely pre-test, treatment and post-test. In addition, to solve the problem of report writing, the researcher applied the discovery learning method. The participants of this study were all the students of X1 MAN 2 Langsa class, 25 students in total. The data collection instruments were pretest and posttest. The data analysis techniques are mean score and t-test. Based on the result of the research, it shows the improvement of students' writing ability of report text through the application of discovery learning method. The students' average score shows the improvement of students' report text writing ability. The students' pre-test result before the application of discovery learning method was (744) with an average of (29.76) and the result after the application of discovery learning method was 1540 with an average of (61.6) with the comparison between the scores before and after the treatment was 796 with an average of (31.84). The average value of students in the post-test is higher than the value in the post-test or before the application of discovery learning method. The application of discovery learning method can improve students' writing skills in the report text of class X MAN 2 Langsa, which means that the hypothesis can be accepted.
