ABSTRAK

To improve students' English reading skills, researchers have a strategy for SMP N 1 Sitellu Tali Urang Jehe with a strategy system for implementing retelling strategies using L1. This research aims to determine what impact L1 retelling strategies in reading comprehension have on students' narrative text reading skills and how the use of L1 retelling strategies in reading comprehension of narrative texts. This type of research is qualitative descriptive research. The subjects in this research were English teachers and class VIII students. Data collection techniques use interviews, questionnaires, and documentation. The data analysis techniques used are data collection, data reduction, discussion, and verification. The research results show that the application of L1 retelling to improve students' reading skills is quite good at SMP N 1 Sitellu Tali Urang Jehe, this is because the percentage of student responses is in the range of 64% which is classified as feasible for implementation. At SMP N 1 Sitellu Tali Urang Jehe. The implementation of the L1 retelling has gone very well. By implementing L1 retelling in English learning, it has increased students' learning motivation, so that students' reading abilities continue to improve. With this, students become faster in understanding English reading improves student achievement and can tell stories back to their friends.
