ABSTRAK

This research aims to identify the strategies teachers use in teaching English to communication disorder and deafness students and identify the challenges that teachers may face during the learning and teaching process in the classroom. This research was conducted at SLB Terpadu Kota Langsa. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative, and the instruments of this research are interviews, observations, field notes, and documentation. This result of this research stated that the teacher's strategy in teaching English is that the teacher uses a direct instruction model in learning, the teacher also uses many kinds of media, and the teacher focuses more on increasing students' vocabulary than other skills in English. The teacher speaks slowly and clearly when using sign language. The challenges teachers face when teaching communication disorder and deafness students come from students' abilities, such as having short memory and differences in students' hearing ability and IQ. These students' conditions encourage teachers to find ways to understand students regarding the material presented. The results of this research highlight that teaching communication disorder and deaf students requires excessive effort and perseverance, and the strategies presented in this research can be helpful for other English teachers in teaching deaf students.
