ABSTRAK

This research provides an analysis of the students’ problem in translatingcompound word into Indonesia on narrative text. Through this research, the
researcher analyzed how the students’ problem in translating compound words
that they found in learning text, especially narrative text. The purposes of researchwere to find out the students found compound words in narrative text and to find
out the students translated compound words in narrative text in SMAN 3 KejuruanMuda. The method of this research is qualitative method. It is distinguished from
quantitative research by its concern with interpreting meaning in textual data andthe spoken word, rather than in numerical data through use of statistical methodsThe sample of this research is the students at Class XII in SMAN 3 KejuruanMuda. In this research, the researcher used theory of O’Grady (1997) to analyzedcompound words and theory of Newmark (1988) to analyzed translation. Based
on the result of collecting data through by researcher on July, 27
th
2018. Thestudents found compound words namely open compound, closed compound andhypenathed compound and they translated compound words is very good. Theytranslated compound words by using translation strategies namely words forwords translation, faithful translation and free translation. It can conclude that the
students can understand about compound word and translating its in the text wellThe researcher hopes for the next researchers can develop this research becomesbetter and also they can support research results.
