ABSTRAK

This study purposed to find out the causes of students’ anxiety in speaking English in the classroom and describe the students’ strategies to overcome their anxiety in speaking. The research conducted at SMK Negeri 3 Langsa. This study used a qualitative method with a case study approach. The subject of this research was the teacher and students of Second Grade at SMK Negeri 3 Langsa. The researcher gave a questionnaire for all students at Class XI Busana 1 at SMK Negeri 3 Langsa. After collected the data from questioner, the researcher would interview  5 students’ who experience anxiety and 5 students’ who do not experience anxiety and 1 English teacher at Class XI Busana 1. Based on the result of the study, it could be concluded that there were some causes that made the students anxiety in speaking English in the classroom. The researcher found there were external and internal factor that made the students anxiety in speaking English. The main factor that determines the most is the external factor which obtained the highest average score for lack of preparation (4,7). Meanwhile, for internal factors, the lowest average value obtained was motivation (2,6). The students have the strategies to overcome students anxiety in speaking English. These encompass careful planning, thorough preparation, and dedicated practice, coupled with maintaining a positive outlook.
