ABSTRAK

The aims of the study are to describe how is the stylistic analysis approach through the novel on students’ reading comprehension and to find out students’ perception toward the advantages of using novel in English language teaching. This research was a descriptive qualitative type. The participants of this research are 36 students from class XI IPB 3 at SMA Negeri 3 Langsa. The researcher used questionnaire, observation, and reading comprehension test to collect the data. The data analysis method was descriptive qualitative. The stylistic analysis used in this study focuses on how students understand figurative language in the novel Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carrol, where there are seven types of figurative language. The results showed that most of participants quite active during the learning process. They are able to identify the type of figurative language in the novel, it is supported by their reading comprehension test result. 29 students scored above 75, 9 students got very good score with range of scores 85-100, 20 students got good score with range of scores 67-84. Students had a positive perception toward the advantages of using novel in English language teaching. All of the respondents agreed that using novels as learning media in the classroom is beneficial: 66,6% agree, 25% strongly agree, and 8,3% neutral. And also, they agreed that novels have a number of advantages. For example, novels can motivate them, enrich their cultural knowledge, and improve their language ability. A stylistic analysis and study of literature will some or the other way help the students and people in all to improve their communication skills as they will get familiar to different languages.
