ABSTRAK

Cultural differences can cause culture shock for those involved in intercultural communication. One example is the Karoneese community from North Sumatra. Since they decided to move to Germany, they have experienced culture shock. The purpose of this study is to  determine the intercultural communication process of the Karoneese community in Germany and how the Karoneese community overcomes the culture shock they experience. This study used a descriptive qualitative approach. Interviews and questionnaires were used as data collection techniques. Data sources were obtained from members of the Karoneese community through five interviews and eight questionnaires. The data analysis technique used is data reduction, data presentation, drawing conclusions. The results of this study indicate that there are differences in the conditions experienced by each respondent in the four phases of culture shock. Differences in socio-cultural conditions resulted in respondents experiencing culture shock in Germany. However, they chose to survive and face all existing conditions, so that overall all respondents were able to adapt in the new cultural environment.
