ABSTRAK

This research entitled an analysis of subtitle strategies in the movie entitled UP. The focused of this research on subtitle strategies. The purpose were to identify the subtitle strategies  and the dominant strategy used in the UP movie. This research is descriptive qualitative research where the data source used script and subtitle of UP movie in English and Indonesian. Based on data analysis there are ten strategies proposed by  Gottlieb, but only eight subtitle strategies used by subtitler in this movie, namely expansion strategy 5 data or (0.65%), paraphrase strategy 50 data or (6.51%), transfer strategy 502 data or (65.36%), imitation strategy 198 data or (25.78%), transcription strategy 3 data or (0.39%), condensation strategy 2 data or (0.26%), decimation strategy 1 data or (0.13%), and deletion strategy 7 data or (0.91%). Meanwhile, two strategies did not used, such as dislocation strategy and resignation strategy. The most common subtitling strategy was transfer strategy, it was used to translate the sentence based on the text from the source language (SL) to the target language (TL) because the genre of this movie is animation, fantasy and adventure that can be watched by all ages. The results of this research are expected to be useful in learning the translation subject especially in subtitle strategies and also for the translator can improve their skill in writing translation.
