ABSTRAK

This study aims to describe the types  of register used in football matches in the English Premier league submitted by commentators and to know the meaning of register used by football commentators in English league matches.  This study used descriptive qualitative research method. The instrument of this research were the commentary scripts of three league match videos namely, the match video of Manchester United vs Liverpool on January 24th 2021, the match video of Chelsea vs Arsenal on August 18th, 2018 and the match video of Chelsea vs Manchester United on October 23rd, 2016. In collecting data, the research took three step namely, identifying, translating, classifying. This study used Eaton theory (2018), which distinguished by five type namely, static or  frozen register, formal register, consultative register, casual register and intimate register. Only  one type of register that found  in the three  match videos, namely casual register.  The commentators in the 3 videos used  a lot of sentences and terms that are not formal. It means, the language used by the commentators in the video is casual language that used in non-formal situations. The meaning that contained in the three match videos, were lexical meaning and contextual meanings.
