ABSTRAK

This research investigated type of pre- questioning used in teaching English narrative text and the effect of pre- questioning technique on students understanding in narrative text. This research was quantitative approach used pre-and post test design. The population of this study were students at the second grade of SMPN 1 Langsa. The total of sample were 30 students. the data collected by observation and test. There were 4 type of pre- questioning that used by teacher. The teacher often used before reading to confirm expectation was 70% and other type was 10 %. The instrument used in this research was test. Then the data were analyzed with T-test formula. From pos-test was 84.56 from 30 respondents and pre- test was 61.46. It means that type of pre- questioning that used by teacher can improve student understanding on narrative text and give effect toward students understanding on narrative text. The teacher often used the fast type of pre- questioning namely “ before reading to confirm expectation 70%, pre- questioning before reading for general comprehension 10%, pre- questioning before reading to extract specific confirmation 10%, pre- questioning before reading before reading for detailed comprehension.
