ABSTRAK

The purposes of these study were to identify the types and to know the erorrs of grammatical cohesion contained on student’s writing used expository text. This research was conducted at SMA Negeri 5 Langsa in the 2022/2023 academic year. The participants of these research were the 2nd grade students of SMA Negeri 5 Langsa. The sources in this study were 27 student’s writing used expository text in class XI IPA1. The method used descriptive qualitative. The results of the analysis shows that there were 632 times students used the cohesion device in their writing text (307 times or 48,57% references, 308 times or 48,73% conjunctions 11 times or 1,74% subtitutions and 6 times or 0,94% ellipsis). There also 7 times errors grammatical cohesion on their writing text and the used of inappropriate grammatical cohesion out of 1,10% the overall used of grammatical cohesion on student’s writing text. The causes of errors include interference or the influence of the first language, in fact English is still a foreign language in Indonesia. The finding also implies that there is still a lot of knowledge about cohesion in writing that many people don't understand. From the descriptive qualitatif data, the accuracy of the grammatical cohesion on student’s writing text at SMA Negeri 5 Langsa were included in the good category. However, students still need to increase the use of cohesive devices to produce a better level of cohesion in their writing text.
