ABSTRAK

The aims of the study were to find out students' perception regarding the use of debate training and the impact to the students’ speaking skill. The research was conducted at SMA Unggul Cut Nyak Dhien Langsa. The participants of this research were eleven members of the debate training extracurricular. The writer used questionnaire, interview, and observation to collect the data. The writer also used descriptive qualitative to analyse the data in order to answer questions regarding people’s opinion, behavior, or characteristics. This study found that the students had a positive perception on the use of debate training in improving speaking skills. All of the respondents agreed that debate helped them to improve their speaking skills: 72,7% strongly agree and 27,2% agree. Also, they agreed that debate helped them to enrich their English vocabulary through many topics from the debate. In addition, debate training taught them to speak systematically and to always prepare their speech before speaking in front of the audience. Furthermore, the students believed that debate training not only helped them to improve their attitude while speaking in front of public but also gave many advantages in improving their speaking skills.
