ABSTRAK

The objectives of the research are to know the learning strategies used by students with high performance and low performance in speaking skills. The research design of this study is descriptive qualitative, all the data were obtained through questionnaire and interviews. The results of this research shows that high performance students have a better balance in using all types of learning strategies (memory, cognitive, compensatory, metacognitive, affective, and social) to improve their speaking skills proposed by Oxford theory. In addition, high performance students use more learning strategies consciously and appropriately compared to low performance students. Based on the research results, it is suggested that students are trained to be more aware of their own speaking learning strategies. They must use appropriate language learning strategies more consciously, purposefully, and frequently in order to be more successful in developing their speaking skills.
