ABSTRAK

This research is to investigate how the language maintenance of, Batak Toba language in Bataknese family in Langsa and to know what are the reasons of bataknese family’s maintaining Batak Toba Language. As interest Bataknese ethnic group is one of the minority groups in Aceh. Bataknese in Langsa live in a multilingual society in which many people use Indonesian and Acehnese as languages of daily communication. This case study was conducted to the bataknese family who live in Langsa . Two instruments covering the interview, and the questionnaire were chosen to gain the data. It was concluded that there Batak Toba language is a cultural heritage therefore the Batak people need to contribute to protect it. Similar to those previous studies, this research also focuses on language maintenance or language heritage.
