ABSTRAK

Parents play an important and influential role in the education of their children’s achievement. The aims of this study were to find out types of parental involvement on students’ achievement in learning English at SMPN 3 Langsa and to investigate the relationship between parental involvement and students’ achievement in learning English. This research used qualitative research using a questionnaire, interview and the document of students’ score as instruments. This study involved eighth grade students of SMPN 3 Langsa and their parents by using purposive sampling. The findings in this research showed that: First, parents of eighth-grade students of SMPN 3 Langsa were more often to use parenting, educating children in home, and volunteer as parent involvement types; on the other hand, they used decision making, communication, collaborate with the community the least. Second, parents who always pay attention to their children, especially attention to their learning activities at home, make children more active and more enthusiastic in learning because they know that it is not only they who want to move forward, but their parents also have the same desire.
