ABSTRAK

Extensive reading is the way of learning a language through reading for enjoyment which is known as pleasure reading. In extensive reading, books have important roles since they can affect the students’ reading motivation. The aims of this research were to unveil the text in textbooks that students read for extensive reading and to discuss their point of view about the chosen text in textbooks. The data were gathered from students of SMAN 3 in Langsa who doing extensive reading activities. The participants of this research consisted of 10 females and 11 male students. Interview students and teacher were used as an instrument to get the data. The result showed that the students read different texts in the textbooks: Global warming, earthquakes, the enchanted fish, bullying : A cancer that must be eradicated, president sukarno of indonesia, vanity and pride, the last leaf, ki hajar dewantara read by them. Most of them said that those text in the textbooks were easy; it made them reading more books. Besides, textbook was good books for extensive reading since those texts are easy and in accordance with the students’ level. In contrast, when the students chose inappropriate levels, it affects their reading motivation. In addition, there were many types of the texts read by the students. Interesting texts which were easy to understand made the students enjoy the reading. On the other hand, there were difficult texts that made the students skip even stop to read.
