TEACHER STRATEGIES IN TEACHING ENGLISH TO YOUNG LEARNERS

ABSTRAK

 English teachers need to use the appropriate strategy in teaching English to young learners so that the learning process is successful and young learners do not feel bored in learning process. This study aimed to find out what the teachers’ strategies are used by teachers in teaching English to young learners and what problems do teacher face in teaching English to young learners especially in reading. This study was a descriptive qualitative method conducted in SMPN 7 Langsa. In collecting data, an observation check list and an interview were conducted. This research used a purposive sampling technique. The sample of this study was English teacher who teach in 7 grade in SMPN 7 Langsa. The result showed that there were four strategies used by a teacher in teaching English especially in the reading skill to young learner, namely : reading a story from book, reading a class story, reading text based on the child's language and building up confidence. Furthermore, the problems do teacher face in teaching English are students unfocus, lack of vocabulary and lack of pronunciation. The problems arose because students did not like learning English and did not have an adequated  time. Additionally, schools’ meager facilities and infrastructure also affect this problem.
