ABSTRAK

The purpose of this study were to determine the questioning and answering strategies in EFL classrooms. There are two problem formulations that are the focus of this research (1) To analyze the types of questioning and answering strategies in EFL classrooms, and (2) To describe the process apply questioning and answering strategies in EFL classrooms. These research was conduct at SMP Negeri 1 Langsa in the 2021/2022 academic year. The participants in these class are second grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Langsa. Taken from three classes different and an English teacher. This method used is descriptive qualitative. The results of this study indicate that the teacher uses a questioning strategy, namely procedural questions, divergent questions, and convergent questions in the EFL classrooms, while students use strategies to answer directly answering, post-poned answering, and discouraged inapropriated questions. For the process apply questioning and answering strategies between teacher and students, namely by involving verbal questions and answers in class during questions play at the beginning, questions at the middle of the class, and questions play at the end. The results showed that the use of the questioning and answering strategies in the classroom was very influential in teaching and learning activities. This is evidenced by the observation that both teacher and students can interact well through questioning and answering strategies in the EFL classrooms.
