AN ANALYSIS OF STUDENTS CRITICAL THINKING THROUGH DEBATE: (WORLD SCHOOL DEBATE STYLE)

ABSTRAK

Focus of this research is to analyze the students’ critical thinking toward the theoretical framework AREL (Assertion, Reason, Evidence and Link Back) by Iqramullah and Natasya (2019) and Systemic Functional Language (SFL) by Martin and White’s Theory (2005). In formulating this research the researcher formulated the problem of the study: ¹How the students’ critical thinking through the World School Style Debate? ²What are the factors of critical thinking used at World School Debate Style? This study uses descriptive qualitative methods, namely observation, structuring debate practice, recording, transcribe the recording and last transcribe the recording.  The subjects of this study were six students of SMA Unggul Cut Nyak Dhien which divided in to two teams. The research instruments are recording equipment and transcription. The data analysis procedure is analyzing the results of transcription, classification, identification and making conclusions and suggestions. In analyzing  process towards the data, researcher found AREL structure which applied by the students. Students made more reasonable reason towards the motion which been applied. In addition the students were succeed to construct the Assertion in debate and made evidences to support the reason. In other hands, three of the students succeed to make the link-back to finish and strengthen those reasons regarding to the motion. In other discovery the types of the students’ critical thinking the researcher applied in Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL). The researcher used Appraisal Systemic Linguistic in SFL. There are three sub-categories in Appraisal Systemic Linguistic ¹Enggagement ²Attitud ³Graduation. Therefore, the more approachable to the critical thinking is Attitudinal sub-category, in Attitudinal sub-category divided in to three categories affect, judgment, and appreciation. The research found that the students have that types of critical thinking whether in effect category, judgment category or appreciation catehory
