ABSTRAK

This research is a research about grammatical cohesion in Philip Roth’s novel “When  she  was  Good”  used  discourse  analysis  approach.  The  purpose  of  this research were to explain the use of grammatical cohesion in the novel and to find the most dominant type of grammatical cohesion in the novel. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative method. The sources of data in this research is the first and the second part of the third parts in Philip Roth's novel "When She was Good" published in 1995, and reference books that support this research. The data collection technique in this research was used note taking technique. Data analysis techniques in this research associated with theories, concepts, and methods based on theory of cohesion. This research used Cohesion in English by Halliday and Matthiessen. The results of this research showed that the most dominant type of grammatical cohesion in the novel is reference. In this novel there are 1,493 data consisting of reference there are 1.223 data or 81.9%, substitution there are 11 data or 0.7%, ellipsis there are 4 data or 0.2% and conjunction there are 255 data or 17.0%. Based on the results, the writer concludes that the most dominant type of grammatical cohesion in the novel is reference, especially personal references. Personal references in this novel most of them refer to Lucy and Roy because both of them are main character in the novel.
