ABSTRAK

The object of this research are to identify the need analysis in learning English at SMK N 4 Langsa and to analysis the suitable of the needs with the textbook that used in the vocational school. Needs Analysis Hyland state that “needs analysis refers to the techniques for collecting and assessing information relevant to course design. According to Chang (2005) the problem of teaching English in vocational students are poor English proficiency, their low interest and motivation in learning and passive performance in class. The method of this research is descriptive qualitative research with observation, interview, and questionnaire as the tools to collecting the data. In this study, the researcher used the need analysis to find what are the necessities, lacks, wants, and learning needs in maritim students. The subject of this research is conduct of TKPI grade X students and the teachers at SMK N 4 Langsa. The result of this study was the students needs more specific English material that suitable with their field study, as like the vocabullary or the the terms in the vessel and the students needs speaking ability to support their carrer in the future after graduating from the vocational school.
